CHICAGO, Il. Freshman Rheanna Bain had three hits as the Finlandia University softball team (7-19) lost 8-7 and 9-0 to Chicago (9-11), Tuesday afternoon at Stagg Field.
In game one, Chicago jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings. In the third, junior Harlie Caster reached on a fielder’s choice. Junior Denia Bent double to score Caster and make it 3-1.
The Maroons scored twice in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 lead. In the fourth inning, junior Kassandra Avila jacked the ball over the left field fence. Chicago would extend its lead to 7-2 entering the seventh.
Two walks and an error loaded the bases for Finlandia with one out. Junior Makenna Gorham singled to drive in a run. An error on the play, scored another run and left Caster at third and Gorham at second.
Avila singled to score Caster and move Gorham to third. Walks to Bain and sophomore Kyndell Coffman would score Gorham. Sophomore Maegan Kraft was hit by a pitch to drive in Avila and tie the game. The Maroons would score in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
For Finlandia, Avila had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs while Bain had two hits. Sophomore Coffman (1-2) gave up six hits, three runs, walked four and struck out two in 3.7 innings.
For Chicago, Maeve Garvey had four hits. Bethany Regnrus (6-3) gave up four hits, two runs, walked three and struck out three in 6.3 innings.
In game two, Chicago broke the game up scoring four runs in the third inning.
For Finlandia, freshman Frannette Fernandez (1-3) gave up eight hits, six runs, four earned and walked one in three innings.
For Chicago, Jordynne Prussak (2-5) gave up one hit, walked one and struck out three in four innings.
Finlandia is back in action, Sunday, Apr. 14 taking on Bay College. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
