Finlandia drops three to UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wi. Junior Patrick Coles, junior Brian Doyle, senior Joey Krug and senior Brandon Teichman had at least three hits each as the Finlandia University baseball team (4-27, 1-18 WIAC) lost 11-2, 11-3 and 5-3 to UW-Platteville (15-17, 9-9 WIAC), Friday afternoon at Kendall Murray Field. Three games were played due to impending bad weather on Saturday, Apr. 27.

In game one, Finlandia jumped to the early lead. In the third inning, sophomore Austin Donahue and Coles singled with one out. Following a fly out, Teichman singled to load the bases.

Krug blasted a double to left field to score Donahue and Coles. That made it 2-0, Lions. UW-Platteville scored five runs in the fourth. The Pioneers put up six in the sixth inning to seal the deal.

For Finlandia, Coles had three hits and Teichman had two. Sophomore Will Thompson (0-3) gave up four hits, seven runs with one earned, walked four and struck out one in five innings.

For Platteville, Jonathan Kelso had four hits. Tyler Vogel (3-3) gave up six hits, two runs, walked three and struck out six in five innings.

In the middle game, UWP took a 1-0 lead after two innings. In the third inning, sophomore Sawyer Murrell singled and Coles was hit by a pitch. UW-Platteville turned a double play to escape.

The Pioneers scored five in the bottom of the third to lead 6-0. In the top of the fourth, Doyle reached on an error and moved to third on a double from Krug.

Teichman singled to score Doyle and moved Krug to third. A sacrifice fly from sophomore Ben Loya scored Krug to make it 6-2. The Pioneers put up a three spot in the fourth to shut the door.

For Finlandia, Coles, Krug and Teichman had two hits each. Junior Ashton Knutson (2-5) gave up 10 hits, 10 runs, six earned, walked two and struck out six in five innings.

For Platteville, Josh Moses had four hits. Keegan Madigan (3-1) gave up eight hits, three runs, two earned and struck out three in seven innings.

In the final game, UWP scored four in the first inning to try and take this one early. Krug then shut the Pioneers down allowing just one hit and one run the rest of the game.

In the fifth inning, Donahue reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Shawn Knutson was hit by a pitch. Doyle laced a double down the right field line to score Donahue.

In the sixth inning, Teichman was hit by a pitch and Murrell reached on an error. Loya laid down a bunt single. A UW-Platteville miscue allowed Teichman to score and Murrell to go to third.

Donahue then pulled off a sacrifice bunt to score Murrell and make it 5-3. The Pioneers set FinnU down 1-2-3 in the seventh for the win.

For Finlandia, Doyle had two hits. Krug (1-5) gave up four hits, five runs, walked three and struck out eight in six innings. Krug’s eight strikeouts gives him 102 for his career; he joins Shawn Wicksheim (2005-08) as the second Lion to have 100 hits and 100 pitching strikeouts in a career.

For Platteville, Russell Lundius (2-1) gave up three hits, two runs which were both unearned, walked one and struck out six in five innings.

Finlandia closes out series against UW-Platteville, Saturday, Apr. 27. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon CST.
