MEQUON, Wi. The Finlandia University football team (0-1) set a school record in a 38-7 loss to Concordia (Wis.) (1-0), Saturday afternoon at Tomasini Stadium.
“We saw some good things and some bad things,” said head coach Travis Wiltzius. “Good thing is we’re growing and playing hard.”
For the first 20 minutes of the game, Finlandia battled even with Concordia. With 11 minutes to go in the first half, the Falcons led just 3-0. CUW scored three touchdowns in the last 10 minutes to seal the game.
For Finlandia, freshman Darin Johnson had a seven yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to break up the shutout. Junior Joshua Eve returned three kickoffs for 55 yards.
Defensively, the Lions recorded 15 tackles for a loss, breaking the old mark of 12 set against Trinity Bible on Oct. 14, 2017. Finlandia also held the Falcons to 57 yards in the air, third lowest total.
Sophomore Dave Carlson had 11 tackles with 2.5 for a loss and junior Taylor Bonetti had eight tackles, 3.5 for a loss with 1.5 sacks. Freshman Thomas Novakovic had two sacks.
For Concordia, Matt Montgomery ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Jaylen Campbell and Dwayne Rackard had seven tackles each.
Finlandia opens the home season, Saturday, Sept. 14 against Ripon. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
