HANCOCK, Mi. The Finlandia University women’s soccer team (5-1-1) used home field advantage to beat Lawrence (5-3) 2-1, Saturday morning at McAfee Field.
“A win is a win,” said head coach Grace Sokolow. “We did not play our best soccer today but we will learn from our mistakes and move on. We are looking forward to a better performance tomorrow.”
In the first five minutes, Finlandia put the pressure on Lawrence. Sophomore Addie Budzinski had a shot stopped on a great play. 10 seconds later, she hit the post to miss another potential goal.
At the 34:19 mark, Budzinski served up a great corner kick that senior Erika Lambert knocked it. That gave the Lions a 1-0 lead. With just under two minutes into the second half, senior Kirsten L’Esperance scored on a pass from freshman Brie Witt.
Finlandia had 18 shots with 10 on goal, six corner kicks and was called for eight fouls.
Lawrence had six shots with three on goal, one corner kick and was called for five fouls. Sarah Yochem had eight saves.
Finlandia remains at McAfee, Sunday, Sept. 22 playing Eureka. The game is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
