Finlandia Women's Hockey battles to the last minute

HANCOCK, Mi. It was a heartbreaker as the Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-2, 0-1 NCHA) fell 1-0 to Trine (2-1, 1-0 NCHA), Friday night at the HOCO.

“I think we played pretty well,” said head coach Matt Marchel. “We were a little too undisciplined which hurt us. We have to get bodies to the net to score goals.”

Defense was on display as the team combined to block 19 shots on the night. Junior Annah Smiddy was especially effective on power plays stopping all nine Trine shots.

In the third period, senior Natasha Kern fired a rocket that stopped by the Thunder goalie. Trine managed to sneak one thru with 3:14 left in the game. Junior Kait Ryynanen had a potential goal in the last 30 seconds taken away by the goalie.

Sophomore Abby Kolek was very efficient on face-offs with 10 wins for a percentage of .667. Smiddy finished the game with 27 saves.

Finlandia remains home, Saturday, Nov. 3 taking on Trine. The game is scheduled to start at 415 p.m.
