Finlandia Women's Hockey Battles Tough Against Wildcats

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WLUC) – The Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-1) lost 8-2 to St. Catherine (1-0), Friday night at Drake Arena.

Finlandia came out of the gates running. Junior Abby Kolek blasted the puck past the goalie to make it 1-0, just 49 seconds into the game.

St. Catherine came back with two goals in a three minute span to lead 2-1. With about ten minutes to go in the first period, senior Bella Abear scored off a pass from senior Kait Ryyanen. The Wildcats scored with a minute left in the opening period, then had two goals in the first three minutes of the second period to pull away.

On face-offs, Kolek had 11 wins and sophomore Malone Heibert had 10. Senior Annah Smiddy had 28 saves to become the first Lion goalie to record 2000 career saves.

Finlandia stays in Minnesota, playing St. Catherine, Saturday, Nov. 2. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. CST
