MILWAUKEE, Wi. Sophomore Carsyn Osterman pulled out a triple double as the Finlandia University women’s basketball team (15-11) beat Pine Manor (6-13) in the ACAA Championship Semi-Finals, Saturday night at the Bloechl Center.
FinnU extended their now record school winning streak to 10 games. The Lions also reached a conference championship game for the first time in school history.
“I am so proud of these twelve girls and my two assistants,” said head coach Mariah Dunham. “We have battled, fought and worked together to get to this point. Pine Manor tested us in ways we haven’t been tested and weathered through the storms. Very impressed with Carsyn’s (Osterman)game tonight. It wasn’t anything to do with her stat line- it was her ability to lock down PMC’s number one player and hustle on defense. We aren’t stopping here. We have unfinished business.”
For the first eight minutes, Pine Manor and Finlandia traded baskets. With two minutes to go, junior Bailey Froberg hit two buckets and assisted on a third bucket. The Lions scored the last eight points to lead 17-10 after one period.
FinnU had a lead of six to 13 points the entire second period. Finlandia opened the third period with a 16-5 run to lead by 20 with 3:46 to go.
The Gators, down 20 heading into the final period, refused to quit. PMC chipped away and closed to eight, 64-56 with 2:25 to go. At the 1:58 mark, sophomore Harlee Froberg hit a jumper to spark a run of nine straight points to finally end the game.
FinnU pulled down 29 defensive rebounds to just 11 offensive for the Gators. The Lions held PMC to 33.3% from the floor and 30% on 3-pointers.
For Finlandia, Osterman finished with 11 points, 15 rebounds, 12 assists and five steals to become the fourth player in program history to get a triple double. The last was Marissa Burke against Mount Mary on Feb. 13, 2014, ironically at the Bloechl Center.
B. Froberg had 17 points, sophomore Mariah Austin scored 12 points and senior Taylor Pertile had 10 points. H. Froberg had 10 rebounds and two steals.
For Pine Manor, Mandy Mastropasqua scored 21 points and Kierra Jackson had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Finlandia plays UC-Santa Cruz, Sunday, Mar. 1 in the ACAA Championship game in Milwaukee. The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. CST
