SUPERIOR, Wis. (WLUC) – It was a fight to the finish as the Finlandia University women’s basketball team (5-11) fell 64-55 to UW-Superior (6-5), Sunday afternoon at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. It was day one of the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic.

“I thought for the most part we battled them tough,” said head coach Mariah Dunham. “The last two minutes, we missed box outs and they capitalized off of it. It was great to see Bailey (Froberg) step up for us due to others having illnesses. I also thought Marti (Jahfetson) did a great job coming in off the bench and hitting a big three in the fourth quarter.”

In the first quarter, Finlandia and UW-Superior played on even terms. The lead was between three and five points, either way.

The Yellowjackets came out smoking in the second quarter with a 9-4 run. That made it 26-16, UWS with 5:46 to go.

The Lions refused to quit and finished the period with a 12-4 burst. Sophomore Katie Lundeen scored in traffic to make it 30-28, UW-Superior at the half.

In the middle of the third quarter, the Yellowjackets went up seven at the 6:30 mark. Again, FinnU responded with a 9-2 run to end the period. Lundeen hit two free throws to tie the game at 44-44.

Most of the final period was back-and-forth. Freshman Martina Jahfetson knocked down a triple from Yooperville to put Finlandia up 55-54 with 3:58 to go. UWS scored the last six points of the game to pull out the win.

The Lions locked out the Yellowjackets from 3-point range allowing them to hit just one of 14 attempts.

For Finlandia, Froberg scored 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. Lundeen added 14 points and two steals.
