Finlandia Women win third straight

HANCOCK, Mi. Freshman Mariah Austin and Katie Lundeen had double-doubles as the Finlandia University women’s basketball team (3-14) knocked off St. Scholastica (2-11) 61-57, Wednesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

St. Scholastica came out of the gate running and gunning. The Saints were up 16-3 after five minutes of action. CSS still have a lead of 10 with 2:17 to go in the first half.

Finlandia stormed back with an 8-2 run in the last two minutes of the first half. Junior Molly Berg hit a jumper just before the buzzer to make it 32-28, St. Scholastica.

The third quarter belonged to the Lions as they out-scored the Saints 22-10 and held them to just 21.4% shooting from the floor.

In the fourth period, freshman Harlee Froberg dropped in a trifecta to put FinnU up by 10, 56-46 with 8:17 to go. CSS chipped away and closed to three 60-57 with 52 seconds left. Berg hit a free throw with 16 seconds left to clinch the game.

The Lions held CSS to 35% from the floor and 19% behind the arc for the game. FinnU won the game on triples as they shot 45.5%.

For Finlandia, Froberg had 17 points, two steals and hit four 3-pointers. Austin had 14 points and 12 rebounds while Lundeen had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Berg came off the bench to scored 12 points.

For St. Scholastica, Kaylee Kennedy had 18 points and three steals.

Finlandia stays home, Saturday, Jan. 12, taking on Adrian. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
