Finlandia Women stay close, lose at Lawrence

APPLETON, Wi. Four double figure scorers was not enough as the Finlandia University women’s basketball team (1-4) lost 78-68 to Lawrence (2-0), Wednesday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

In the first period, the lead was never more than three points either way. The period saw two ties and six lead changes.

The second period saw Lawrence lead for the first four minute. The Vikings were up 25-21 at the 5:58 mark when Finlandia struck. Freshman Casana Ryynanen hit a jumper and the Lions were off and running.

Sophomore Carsyn Osterman hit two free throws to end a run of 10 straight points. That made it 31-25 with 2:23 to go. FinnU led by four 33-29 at the half.

In the third period, Lawrence tied it up early, then went out to a six-point lead at the 4:26 mark. Sophomore Harlee Froberg scored five points to cut it to one 46-45 with 3:30 to go.

The Vikings pushed the lead to eight, 58-50 with 8:46 left in the fourth period. Finlandia chipped away and took back the lead on a tough jumper from senior Taylor Pertile at the 5:17 mark.

Lawrence regained the lead with 3:25 to go. The Lions closed to four, 72-68 with 1:49 left but could get no closer.

For Finlandia, Osterman had 14 points, five assists and three steals, sophomore Mariah Austin scored 14 points and Froberg had 13 points and nine rebounds. Ryynanen scored 13 points off the bench.

For Lawrence, Kenya Earl had 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Finlandia heads to the other end of the U.P., Friday, Nov. 22 to play Lake Superior State. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
