LACROSSE, Wi. Junior Bailey Froberg and sophomore Harlee Froberg scored in double figures as the Finlandia University women’s basketball team (3-6) lost 74-56 to #17 UW-La Crosse (6-1), Friday night at Mitchell Hall. It was day one of the UWL Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic.
“La Crosse is a great team,” said head coach Marian Dunham. “However, I thought we were a step slow tonight. We only played in spurts instead of consistent play the entire game. Luckily we get another opportunity tomorrow.”
The first period was like the early stages of a boxing championship match. Finlandia and UW La Crosse were countering each other. Down four, Bailey Froberg lit it up from downtown to make it 12-11, Eagles with 2:52 to go.
UWL countered with a triple just in front of the buzzer. For the first four minutes of the second period, the Lions hung in there with UW-La Crosse. Sophomore Katie Lundeen hit a pair of free throws to cut the margin to five.
The Eagles ripped out seven straight points and led by double figures the rest of the half. Down 13 early in the second, FinnU put on a display of SISU.
Hailey Froberg launched a monster bomb to get the party started. Sophomore Carsyn Osterman hit a lay-up and senior Taylor Pertile knocked down a jumper. Just like that, seven straight points and Finlandia was down 43-37 at the 5:28 mark.
That forced UWL to call a timeout. UW-LaCrosse came out composed and went on a 12-2 run to lead by 16 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lions weren’t ready to quit and Bailey Froberg scored seven straight points to cut it to nine points with 7:08 to go. The Eagles scored 11 straight points to seal the game.
For the game, the Eagles were held to 36.7% shooting from the floor. The Lions allowed UWL to score just five second chance points.
For Finlandia, Bailey Froberg had 21 points, seven rebounds and hit four triples while Harlee. Froberg had 12 points and two steals.
For UW-La Crosse, D. Schoenenberger had 13 points.
Finlandia remains on the road, Saturday, Nov. 30 taking on UW-River Falls in La Crosse, Wis. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. CST
