Finlandia Softball keeps Northland winless

ASHLAND, Wi. All the cogs of the machine were meshing perfectly as the Finlandia University softball team (5-17) swept Northland (0-12) 20-2 and 15-5, Sunday afternoon at Ponzio Stadium.

In game one, Finlandia scored nine runs in the first two innings and were never headed. The Lions pounded out 12 hits and stole nine bases.

For Finlandia, junior Kassandra Avila had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two runs, junior Denia Bent had two hits, scored four runs and drove in two runs while junior Harlie Caster had two hits and scored three runs. Avila (2-7) gave up four hits, two runs, one earned, walked two and struck out five in five innings.

For Northland, Saylor Donnelly and Remi Orr had two hits each. Kylie Wickiser (0-4) gave up 10 hits, 13 runs, six earned and walked five in 3.3 innings.

In game two, Finlandia started quick. In the first inning, Caster walked and scored off a triple by Bent. Junior Makenna Gorham doubled to push Bent across the plate.

A single and a walk loaded the bases. Sophomore Maegan Kraft single to drive in a run. The Lions would use a sacrifice fly and an error to finish the inning with five runs.

Northland chipped away and would tie the game at 5-5 after three innings. In the fifth inning, with two outs, Caster singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.

Bent singled and stole second. She and Caster would score off a single by Gorham. Avila singled to push Gorham across the plate. FinnU scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to seal it.

For Finlandia, Avila, Caster and Gorham had three hits each. Freshman Frannette Fernandez (1-2) gave up eight hits, five runs, three earned, walked one and struck out two in six innings.

For Northland, Donnelly, Alivia Heller and Wickiser had two hits each. Orr (0-3) gave up 11 hits, eight runs, seven earned and walked six in five innings.

Finlandia returns to Wisconsin, Wednesday, Apr. 3 taking on Ripon. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. CST.
