HANCOCK, Mi. Everyone was on the same page as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (4-8-1, 2-4-1 NCHA) knocked off Aurora (8-6, 5-2 NCHA) 2-1, Friday night at the Houghton County Arena.
“We had a SISU effort tonight,” said head coach Joe Burcar.
Both teams were aggressive in front of the net with 25 shots combined. With 2:31 left in the opening period, sophomore Connor Hannon put the puck in the net to make it 1-0.
Aurora stormed the Finlandia net with 12 shots in the first nine minutes of the second period. Sophomore Marcus Gloss was on fire with several great saves.
At the 10:17 mark of the second, junior Paul Lochner scored from freshman Cory Richardson. That made it 2-0 Lions. The Spartans scored less than three minutes into the third period to close the gap to 2-1.
FinnU saw sophomore Connor Hannon and freshman Teddy Randell both hit the pipe with shots. Aurora was on a 6-4 power play the last 1:40 of the game. Gloss made two amazing saves to hold on for the win.
Finlandia won 37 of 66 face-offs on the night led by sophomore Hunter Kero and junior Blake Peavey with nine each. Gloss finished the contest with 39 saves.
Finlandia remains home, Saturday, Jan. 5 playing Lake Forest. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
