HANCOCK, Mi. Seniors Albert Hammond and Javier Martinez left the pitch winners as the Finlandia University men’s soccer team (3-9-1) knocked off Emmaus Bible (2-8-1) 3-0, Saturday afternoon at McAfee Field.
“We came out well organized and executed our game plan correctly,” said head coach Scott Chrysafidis. “I’m proud of how well we communicated as a team. It was great to see everyone involved. We are growing very very strong as a team.”
For the first 25 minutes, Finlandia put Emmaus Bible on their heels. The Lions were moving the ball well on offense. Defensively, FinnU set up a wall at midfield that the Eagles could not penetrate.
At the 26:01 mark, freshman Chelan Gonzalez took advantage of two great passes to find the twine to make it 1-0. Finlandia scored twice in the last 11 minutes of the first half to pull away.
Finlandia had 41 shots with 20 on goal, 12 corner kicks and were called for six fouls. Freshman Akwasi Kwarteng had two goals while Martinez had two assists.
Emmaus Bible had seven shots with three on goal, one corner kick and was called for one foul. Jacob Bauder had 17 saves,
Finlandia takes to the road, Tuesday, Oct. 15 playing Lawrence. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. CST
