HANCOCK, Mi. It was another display of grits and toughness as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (2-7-2, 0-5-2 NCHA) battled to a 2-2 tie with #11 MSOE (6-1-2, 1-1-2 NCHA), Friday night at the Houghton County Arena.
MSOE went on the attack early but the play of junior Marcus Gloss kept the Raiders off the board. At the 7:43 mark, sophomore Tyler Watungwa found the puck in front of the net and scored. That put Finlandia up 1-0.
MSOE scored just 57 seconds into the second period to tie it up. The Lions continued to be aggressive with several shots just missing.
In the third period, at the 1:27 mark, Watungwa scored a power play goal to put FinnU up 2-1. Freshman Jack Giddings had a great looking shot that was saved. With about 12 minutes left in the third, the Raiders knocked one in to make it 2-2.
Sophomore Cory Richardson and junior Cale Markham had shots on target blocked in the final two minutes. Gloss made a great save just before the end of the period. In overtime, neither team was able to gain any momentum.
The Lions were active on defense blocking 16 shots on the night. Senior Blake Peavey had 12 face-off wins. Gloss finished the night with 33 saves.
Finlandia remains home, Saturday, Dec. 7, taking on #11 MSOE. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
