HANCOCK, Mi. The Finlandia University men’s hockey team (6-10-2, 3-5-2 NCHA) overcame a slow start to beat St. Scholastica (9-8-1, 4-6-1 NCHA) 7-4, Friday night at the Houghton County Arena. The win moves the Lions into fourth place in the NCHA North Division

“We had balanced scoring and good team defense,” said head coach Joe Burcar.

St. Scholastica scored twice in the first ten minutes and threatened to run away with the game. With 3:24 left in the first, junior Blake Peavey put Finlandia on the board.

Goals by senior Alex Rezansoff and freshman Teddy Randell had the Lions up 3-2 at the 14:38 mark of the second period. The Saints scored with less than three minutes left in the middle period to tie it once again.

Sophomores Cale Markham and Connor Hannon scored in the first four minutes of the final period to give FinnU some breathing room. The Lions kept up the pressure to hold CSS at bay.

Markham finished the game with a hat trick, the first of his career. Junior Paul Lochner paced the squad with three assists. The Lions helped their cause by blocking 19 shots by CSS. Sophomore Marcus Gloss had 27 shots.

Finlandia remains home, Saturday, Jan. 19 taking on Northland College. The game is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
