HANCOCK, Mi. The Finlandia University men’s hockey team (3-6-1, 1-3-1 NCHA) never stopped fighting in a 2-0 loss to #14 Marian (6-2-1, 5-0 NCHA), Friday night at the Houghton County Arena.
Freshman Russell Daavettila fired up a shot that just missed going in early in the game. Marian took advantage of a power play five minutes in to go up 1-0.
In the second period, Daavettila and freshman Teddy Randell had potential goals taken away by the Sabres goalie. Finlandia had several more near misses in the third period.
Marian got an insurance goal at the 14:52 mark. The Sabres held on as FinnU had four shots stopped by Hunter Vovra in the last 2:30 of the contest.
Finlandia was 37-33 on face-offs with sophomore Hunter Kero and junior Blake Peavey with 10 wins each. FinnU blocked 12 shots on the night as sophomore Marcus Gloss finished with 29 saves.
Finlandia remains home, Friday, Dec. 1 taking on Lawrence. The game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m.
