HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – The HOCO was rocking and shaking as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (3-7-2, 1-5-2 NCHA) knocked off #11 MSOE (6-2-2, 1-2-2 NCHA) 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena. This is the second straight year the Lions have beaten a top 11 team at home.
In the first two minutes of the game, freshman Jack Giddings had two great shots that were saved at the last minute. The goalies were on center stage with a total of 20 saves in the period. MSOE managed to sneak one in at the 12:17 mark.
In the second period, junior Marcus Gloss kept Finlandia in the contest with numerous amazing stops. With 6:02 left in the period, senior Jayson Dahlquist sent a perfect pass to junior Cale Markham. Markham put the puck in the net to make it 1-1.
In the third period, the Lions and Raiders each saw numerous chances denied by the goalies. With just 1:04 left in the game, sophomore Teddy Randell scored off a pass from sophomore Tyler Watungwa. Giddings scored an empty netter with 30 seconds left to seal the game.
The Lions were active on defense blocking 12 shots on the night. Senior Blake Peavey had 12 face-off wins. Gloss turned back 35 saves in the contest.
Finlandia is off until Friday, Jan. 3 when they take on Concordia Wisconsin. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. CST.
