HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – A tremendous display of heart and effort was on display as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (0-4, 0-2 NCHA) took a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to #21 Aurora (4-0, 2-0 NCHA), Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.
In the first period, junior Marcus Gloss and Josh Boyko out on a show combining for 16 saves. With 4:01 to go, freshman Tyler Vanuden fired a pass to sophomore Tyler Watungwa. He knocked it in to make it 1-0, Finlandia.
The Lions came out blazing in the second period. Junior Connor Hannon scored a short-handed goal just 28 second in to put it 2-0, FinnU. Aurora took advantage of a power play to close to 2-1 at the 7:21 mark.
In the third period, the Spartans scored in the first two minutes to tie it up. In the middle of the period, FinnU had three great opportunities that just missed. Aurora scored 57 seconds into overtime to escape with the win.
On face-offs, Finlandia had 35 wins for a .530 win percentage. They were led by Watungwa with 12 wins and senior Blake Peavey at nine. Gloss came away with 29 saves.
Finlandia hits the road Friday, Nov. 15 against Adrian. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m.
