Finlandia Men's Basketball drops 13 point decision at home

HANCOCK, Mi. Charity does not begin at home as the Finlandia University men’s basketball team (0-8) lost 69-56 to UW-Stout (5-4), Friday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

For the first 12 minutes, the game was played on even terms. Sophomore Dylan Underwood scored at the 12:48 mark to make it 11-8, Finlandia.

Tied at 13 with 7:38 to go, UW-Stout made a run to put the Lions away. The Blue Devils outscored FinnU 18-2 to lead by 16, 31-15 with two minutes to go.

Freshman Jaden Janke hit a triple at the buzzer to end a 10-0 run by Finlandia. That made it 31-25, Stout at the break.

In the second half, the Blue Devils could not shake the pesky Lions. Down seven, FinnU scored nine straight points. Freshman Kevin Straih hit an off balance jumper to give Finlandia the lead, 43-41 at the 11:34 mark.

Stout built a six point lead with 7:16 to play before the Lion charged back. Straih dropped in another jumper to tie the game at 53-53 at the 5:42 mark.

Down five, Underwood scored and hit the charity toss to close the gap to 58-56 with 4:32 left. UW-Stout scored the last 11 points of the game to seal the deal.

Finlandia held the Blue Devils to shooting 31.3% from the floor and 14.8 on 3-pointers. The story of the game was at the line, where Stout hit 23 free throws to nine for the Lions.

For Finlandia, Underwood had 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals while Janke scored 16 points. Senior Austin Carlson had eight points and 10 rebounds.

For UW-Stout, John Keefe had 27 points and Jon Ciriacks had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Finlandia heads west to Iowa, taking on Beuna Vista, Wednesday, Dec. 19. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. CST
