Finlandia Men outrun by Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wi. The Finlandia University men’s basketball team (0-13) lost 88-64 to UW-Superior (4-13), Monday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Finlandia and UW-Superior played on even terms for the first eight minutes. The Yellowjackets were up six before the Lions made a run.

Freshman River Shumate hit a jumper and followed that with a pair of charity tosses. That made it 17-15, Superior with 12 minutes left. UW-Superior scored 10 straight points to effectively seal the game.

The Lions had 24 defensive rebounds to just six offensive for UWS. The difference was shooting as FinnU was outshot 53.7% to 36.4%.

For Finlandia, sophomore Dylan Underwood had 21 points and two steals and freshman Jaden Janke had nine points and 17 rebounds. Shumate came off the bench to score 12 points.

For UW-Superior, Carter Brown had 23 points and Montroy Scott had 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Finlandia stays on the road, Saturday, Jan. 19 playing Gogebic. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
