Finlandia Men earn historic win over UW-River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wi. It was a historic win as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (1-0) beat UW-River Falls (1-1) 3-1, Saturday night at Hunt Arena. It was the first win ever over UWRF and the first season-opener win since 2011-12.

For the first 15 minutes, Finlandia and UW-River Falls balanced each other out. The Lions were aggressive in front of their goal blocking five shots.

With 4:29 to go in the first period, the Falcons broke through and put one in the net. FinnU wasted no time in evening the contest as freshman Teddy Randell scored a power play goal just 55 seconds into the second period.

UWRF played tough blocking six shots in the second period. With 52 second left in the period, senior Kendall Bolen-Porter scored a short-handed goal to make it 2-1. Sophomore Connor Hannon got an insurance goal midway through the final period on a power play.

Junior Blake Peavey was effective on face-offs with 11 wins. Sophomore Marcus Gloss picked up 29 saves on the night.

Finlandia remains at home, Saturday, Nov. 11 taking on Trine. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
