Finlandia Men don't fare well against Knights

ORLANDO, Fl. Freshman Kaleb Kirksey and junior Dylan Underwood scored in double figures as the Finlandia University men’s basketball team (0-12) fell 98-79 to Carleton (4-5), Thursday night at the RDV Sportsplex.

The first half was a game of runs for the first 16 minutes. Junior Jacob Oom knocked down a long shot to cut the gap to 11-9 at the 16:34 mark.

Carleton went on a 19-9 run to lead by 11, 30-19 with 11:46 left. Finlandia started a nice rally. Sophomore Joe Heinonen knocked down a jumper to close a run of 10 straight.

That made it 31-29, Knights at the 9:41 mark. For the next five minutes, the Lions stayed within three to five points. Over the last four minutes of the half, Carleton went on a 16-7 run to effectively end the game.

The Lions did a strong job on rebounds, pulling down 24 defensive to 12 offensive for the Knights. FinnU also held them to 33.3% on 3-pointers.

For Finlandia, Underwood had 17 points and six assists and Kirksey had 17 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore River Shumate added 10 points.

For Carleton, Jeremy Beckler had 23 points and Kent Hanson scored 21.

Finlandia is off until Thursday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Northland. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. CST
