HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – Records were falling in the snow as the Finlandia University football team (0-8, 0-5 MIAA) fell 48-24 to Adrian (4-4, 3-2 MIAA), Saturday afternoon at McAfee Field.
“Offensively, we had a very balanced attack,” said head coach Travis Wiltzius. “That resulted in playing the best offensive game all season for us. Special teams played very well and didn’t give up any points. Our defense made some key turnovers, but early in the game we had our struggles.”
Adrian moved methodically down the field to stake out a 13-0 lead after seven minutes. Finlandia struck back with runs picking up 18 yards. Sophomore DJ Davis closed the drive with a 51 yard touchdown run.
That made the score 14-6 in favor of the Bulldogs. Adrian would score three touchdowns over the next 19 minutes to seal the deal.
Offensively, the Lions finished with 431 yards in total offense, breaking the school record of 418 against Maranatha Baptist on Oct. 3, 2015. Davis finished with 136 yards and three touchdowns. He had the first 100-yard game since Sept. 30, 2017 and is just the second Lion to score three touchdowns in a game.
Freshman Darin Johnson warmed up the air by going 17-of-30 for 245 yards. Sophomore Kenny Kujawa caught seven passes for 105 yards while senior Bryce Beauchaine had five catches for 74 yards and a score. Kujawa would finish with 190 yards in all-purpose yardage.
Defensively, Finlandia (#1 in NCAA D3 Pass Defense) gave up just 75 yards in the air over the last three quarters. Sophomore Marvin Anthony had 13 tackles, sophomore Chris Newell had nine tackles and blocked three passes and sophomore Dave Carlson had eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
Finlandia closes the home season, Nov. 9 with Albion. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
