APPLETON, Wis. (WLUC) – A five minute burst was the difference as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (0-7-1, 0-5-1 NCHA) lost 5-2 to Lawrence (1-5-1, 1-3-1 NCHA), Saturday afternoon at the Appleton Ice Center.
Finlandia and Lawrence played on even terms for the first 20 minutes. Strong goaltending and aggressive defense didn’t allow either team to get a rhythm offensively.
The Vikings finally broke the ice a little over two minutes into the second period. Sophomore Santeri Seppinen kept the Lions alive with several great saves. With 41 seconds left, sophomore Dylan Paavola scored off a pass from freshman Zach Erhardt to tie it at 1-1.
FinnU had two great opportunities in the first five minutes of the third period that just missed. Lawrence scored three goals in a five minute span and it looked bleak, down 4-1 with seven minutes to go.
At the 14:12 mark, junior Connor Hannon scored with the assist going to senior Blake Peavey to make it 4-2. The Vikings scored 13 seconds later, then held off a charging Finlandia squad for the final five minutes.
Seppinen finished with 25 saves.
Finlandia remains on the road, Friday, Nov. 29, playing Northland. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. CST
