#19 Wildcats' Comeback Falls Just Short Against Huskies Hockey Saturday Night, 3-2

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) — Northern Michigan (7-5-2, 5-3-0-0 WCHA) fought a tough battle Saturday night at the Berry Events Center (3,945) but ultimately fell to their rival Michigan Tech (7-6-0, 5-5-0-0 WCHA), 3-2.

Although down three goals heading into the third, the Wildcats battled it out for a full 60 minutes and continued to pressure the MTU zone, outshooting the Huskies 35-22, including a combined 25-10 in the latter two periods.

The first period proved fairly even Saturday evening, with the Wildcats firing 10 shots on net to MTU's 12. John Hawthorne was a wall in net, stopping 11 of the shots to keep it a one-goal game heading into the first intermission.

The Huskies came back in the second to find the back of the net twice more for the 3-0 lead through 40 minutes of play although the Wildcats outshot MTU 13-5 in the frame.

Griffin Loughran got the Wildcats on the board with 13:05 remaining when he tucked in the back door shot off a cross from classmate Vincent de Mey.

The Wildcats then cut the lead to one in the final minutes of the game. With the extra attacker on the ice, Adam Roeder found the back of the net off a deep one-timer with just over a minute to go.

NMU was unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle and the Huskies skated away with the 3-2 victory.

GOALS
• The team's leader in goals, Griffin Loughran netted his 11th of the season with 6:55 elapsed in the third period. His shot beat Huskies' net minder Jurusik stick side after Vincent de Mey fired the puck across the crease onto the tape of Loughran who buried it. Ty Readman also picked up an assist on the play for his eighth of the season.
• Adam Roeder cut the Huskies' lead to one with 1:12 to go in the game with a one-timer from the point. Calling for the puck, he wound up for his shot as Nardi sent it across the ice. Senior captain Philip Beaulieu had the second assist on the goal, for his fourth in the last three games and third of the weekend.

KEY STATS
• Griffin Loughran's 11th goal of the season, coming at 6:55 of the third period, puts him back on top the national standings where he sits tied for first in the category and ranks eighth in goals per game (0.79).
• The Wildcats combined to block 11 shots, led by defenseman Philip Beaulieu who jumped in front of three Saturday night.
• Vincent de Mey led the team in shots, firing six shots on net but was unable to beat MTU's net minder Jurusik in the crease.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats head south for a series against Alabama Huntsville, November 29-30. The series will conclude the bookended month with the Wildcats boasting a weekend sweep at home November 1-2 to kick off their four week home stand.
