A major project that will add two roundabouts and a tunnel to one of the busiest sections of U.P. highway begins Monday.

MDOT is reconstructing US-41/M-28 between Marquette County Road 492 to just west of Brickyard Road, extending the existing boulevard. Westbound lanes will be shifted north to accommodate the divided highway.

The project includes replacing signalized intersections with roundabouts at Brickyard Road and at CR 492 near Walmart and Target, along with constructing indirect left-turn lanes, or "Michigan Lefts." A new multi-use tunnel will be constructed beneath the highway, just west of CR 492.

MDOT says two lanes will be open in each direction for much of the project. Later stages will have eastbound traffic reduced to one lane and there will be a brief period where westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane near Brickyard Road.

Drivers should expect delays for traffic shifts, lane closures and temporary traffic signals. Traffic patterns will change as the season progresses in order to construct various stages of this project. Drivers will also need to be aware of temporary changes to local business access via local road detours or temporary drives. To subscribe to an e-mail list for project updates, contact

MDOT says the project is expected to improve safety and traffic flow in this busy commercial corridor. Its estimated completion date is June 2020.

The budget for the road work is estimated at $8.5 million, with another $2.4 million estimated for the multi-use trail and tunnel.
