MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WLUC) - Schoolcraft County held a recount on their votes from the November election on Friday, December 14, regarding the county jail millage and the district one seat on the board of commissioners.
The outcome of the recount stayed the same, with the jail millage failing and Craig Reiter winning the seat of county commissioner. Originally, incumbent Reiter ran against write-in candidate William Vandagriff for the seat and won by only nine votes...the same numbers originally calculated.
The jail millage failed, losing by 108 votes, which is just one more than in the November election. This 20 year millage would fund a new county jail and department programs.
"When you have a vote that is this close with this many people, we believe, there would be enough citizens here that voted for this so it was worth to do it again," said Schoolcraft County Sheriff, Paul Furman.
With the jail millage not passing in the recount, the Schoolcraft County sheriff says there is a possibly to put the millage on the spring ballot.
