CRYSTAL FALLS, Mich. (WLUC) - Verdicts were split in the four-count jury trial against Joseph Rankin on Wednesday evening.
The jury decision was as follows:
Count 1 - Operating without license - Not Guilty
Count 2 - Criminal Sexual Conduct, Second Degree - Not Applicable
Count 3 - Criminal Sexual Conduct, Fourth Degree - Guilty
Count 4 - Assault and Battery - Guilty
Wednesday was day three of what was supposed to be a week long trial. Prosecution and defense both called their expert witnesses on Wednesday afternoon before closing arguments Wednesday evening. Rankin did not take the stand in his own defense.
Criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree is a misdemeanor punishable by not more than 2 years in prison or a fine of not more than $500, or both. The punishments for misdemeanors differ depending on context and severity.
Sentencing for Rankin has been set for Jan. 22 at 10 a.m.
