Upper Peninsula Special Olympics Winter Regional games held in Marquette on Saturday

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Special Olympics athletes were competing in Marquette Saturday afternoon.

The 2020 Upper Peninsula Winter Regional Games were held at Marquette Mountain and the Rippling River Resort on Saturday. The festivities began with the opening ceremonies. Those ceremonies were followed by snowshoeing, cross country skiing, alpine skiing and snowboarding.

The games are made possible thanks to plenty of generous community support.

“Without them, this program isn't possible,” said Special Olympics Area 36 director Pamela Bahrman. “Our program is all volunteer based, even myself, we're all volunteers doing this for the athletes.”

Winners from Saturday will compete at the state winter games February 5-7.
