New safety grades were released Thursday for four major Upper Michigan hospitals.

Dickinson County Healthcare System and UP Health System-Portage both have "A" grades for Fall 2019. UP Health System-Marquette and War Memorial Hospital both have a "B" grade for Fall 2019.

These scores come from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit representing hundreds of employers and purchasers of health care.

The independent grading system assigns letter grades twice a year to general acute-care hospitals in the U.S. based on their ability to protect patients from avoidable errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

In Michigan, 78 hospitals were graded, and 32 earned an “A,” 21 earned a “B,” 18 earned a “C,” 7 earned a “D” and no “F” grades were recorded.
