ONTONAGON, Mich. (WLUC) - Upper Peninsula Power Company and Efficiency United are assisting Ontonagon Village Housing Commission (OVHC) with energy efficiency upgrades to their heating system.
New high efficiency cold climate mini-split heat pumps will be installed at 12 of the Housing Commission’s units to provide heat during the winter months, even when outside temperatures are -10 degrees Fahrenheit. The new heat pumps will reduce the commission’s reliance on electric baseboard heaters and will lower their energy consumption and bills. The mini-split heat pumps will also provide cooling during the warm summer months, improving tenant comfort throughout the year.
This multi-year project begins this fall when 12 OVHC units are slated to receive the new cold climate mini-split heat pumps.
UPPCO and OVHC have been collaborating since 1968, when they first received the “All-Electric Building Award.” The All-Electric Home Building Campaign was launched in 1956. The nationwide campaign was supported by 180 electrical manufacturers and 300 electric utilities who rushed to build electrical plants to streamline production and meet the growing demand for electricity. Recipients of the award were recognized for their cutting-edge achievements.
Fast forward 50 years, and OVHC continues to work with UPPCO to conserve energy, by actively participating in the utility’s Energy Waste Reduction Program.
UPPCO, OVHC and Efficiency United have also partnered to weatherize all 60 OVHC domicile units to prepare for installation of the cold climate mini-split heat pumps. The weatherization effort has already saved OVHC approximately 10 percent off its energy bill during the winter of 2018-2019. These savings will continue to accumulate for many years to come. OVHC’s decision to install today’s cutting-edge heat pump technology for cold climates, and their commitment to energy efficiency, is a model for the community and the Upper Peninsula.
