UPHS staff performs mock operations in new Marquette hospital

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - On Thursday, more than 400 U.P. Health System-Marquette employees gathered at the new UPHS hospital for 'Day in the Life' training.

This type of training is a considered like a dress rehearsal for operations.

"It’s a very exciting day for us, so we finally get to test out how things are going to work out in the hospital," said Neurosurgeon Sonia Geschwindt.

Employees were able to test several scenarios in the new hospital environment and systems in place.

Along for the ride as one of Thursday’s mock patients, TV6's Andrew LaCombe, was front and center as employees worked together to figure out their new space.

"From my perspective I saw and hear many people talk to each other, figuring out the layout and getting used to what’s best, especially with different routes and hours during daytime, weekends," said LaCombe. "They have to learn because just imagine taking your work environment where you’ve been for decades and having it completely switched around."

Nurses, physicians, and doctors were grouped up to practice with other departments and take LaCombe into the new Emergency Room, Operating Room and Intensive Care Unit.

Groups were able to work as a team to find the best way to move and operate on patients using new equipment.

"Working as a group you can actually figure out what could be missing in this path that we are working on how can this be improved from the get-go, you were able to have a live feedback from everyone on the team," said Geschwindt.

One of the other highlights of the day for employees was getting their hands on their brand new equipment, like the beds.

"This is so nice, you don’t understand how nice this is. For our trauma patients, it's super helpful," exclaimed several employees during the operation scenarios.

Thursday’s eight-hour training will be followed by an in-depth debrief session to go over what worked and what needs to be improved.

"We are going to break everything down and the good news is that we have time before the new opens to take care of those issues to make sure they are worked through and seamless," said Victor Harrington, UPHS Regional Marketing Director.

Training and tours will continue with staff over the next few weeks leading up to the ribbon cutting on April 5.
