UP Health System-Marquette plans to open its new $300 million hospital in one year.

UPHS-Marquette announced the April 2019 opening Thursday afternoon for the nearly 700,000 sq. ft. building on Baraga Ave. The attached medical offices at the new site will open in March.

The new hospital will have 275 beds. A big change for patients will be private rooms, instead of current double-occupancy rooms at the existing UPHS-Marquette hospital.

Mary Armijo, an associate administrator at UPHS-Marquette, says 450 construction workers are currently on site, and construction work should finish by the end of this year. The hospital will then practice the process of moving patients over from the current hospital. That will happen in one day.

TV6's Julie Williams will have reports from the construction site on your TV6 First Look, TV6 Early News and TV6 News Tonight.
