UPAWS hosts Cause for Paws Annual Gala
The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter held their annual Cause for Paws Annual Gala Saturday.
It’s the biggest fund raiser of the year for UPAWS according to Board Treasurer, Amber Talo.
She says last year UPAWS was able to raise $34,000 on the evening. Staff at UPAWS depends on that money to make their efforts possible.
250 people all across the Upper Peninsula showed up for Saturday’s festivities, which also serve to celebrate the bond between people and their pets. In fact, attendees were encouraged to dress up like their pets.
There were hors d'ouevres, drawings, raffle prizes, live and silent auctions, live music and much more. It's all to help UPAWS find families for homeless animals.
"Without fundraisers like this and without our amazing community we really can't do it. So the work is never done. We're in our beautiful new facility but the fund raising is never over. We don't receive government funding. We rely on our friends and neighbors. They're the reason we're able to be here,” Talo announced.
Talo also stated that she and everyone at UPAWS are forever grateful to the community for supporting their dream of building a new community center.
“Now it’s a role reversal. We're saying what do you want from us? What do you want to see in our community center? Because that's what it is. They’ve come in droves with some really great ideas like a memorial garden, a pole barn for large animal rescue, the very first one in the entire Upper Peninsula and a fenced in, year-round community dog park. Our community made that happen,” Talo declared.
