MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The UP200 draws thousands of visitors to the Marquette area. Washington Street from 6th to Front, closed to traffic and lined with spectators.
"Well it's gorgeous weather ... I thought I'd lay out for a little bit, play with the dogs," said John James, Michigan Republican Senate Candidate. "But in all seriousness, it's my first time up here for the UP200. My family actually has a camp up here in Blaney Park, and we get up here fairly often since I was a little kid. But this is actually my first time seeing the dogs, and being around the fanfare and hustle and bustle that's going on, right here in Marquette."
Tonight was a first for many Upper Michigan children too -- love and dogs the theme on this Valentine's Day.
"I'm really excited to see the dogs because I love dogs," said Stela Leahy, third grade student.
"I'm really excited," said Calienna Paris, a fourth grade student. "And I'm excited to be here because I've never seen sled dogs before, and I also love dogs."
Some of the teams running tonight are from Michigan, Wisconsin, and as far away as Alaska and Canada.
If you'd like to watch the teams finish the race, you can come out to downtown Marquette on Sunday.
