HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - On average, hearing aids range from $1,500 to $3,500 per unit. The cost is doubled if a person needs one for each ear.
Due to the pricing of hearing aids, U.P. Audiology understands everyone can't afford to purchase a pair no matter how necessary it is, which is why they felt the need to do something special for their community.
"This past Christmas, we chose to do something called hear for the holidays where we would have people send in letters, nominate family members, friends who were really in need of hearing aids but couldn't afford them,” said Dr. Melissa Collard, U.P. Audiology owner.
After the overwhelmingly amount of letters U.P. Audiology received from the community, they narrowed it down to three people.
Virginia Perry, one of the contest's winners, was nominated by her great-granddaughter.
"It helps her so much, but she couldn't afford it so to have it for free for her, it really just helps her a lot,” said Jaylah Ladd, Virginia Perry’s great-granddaughter.
Along with Perry, the other two contestant winners agreed and said they faced the same challenge as well.
"I couldn't hear very much,” said Laura Moore, one of the contestant winners. “I was constantly asking people to repeat things and I was missing a lot."
After receiving these free hearing aids, the winners say their lives have completely changed. They can hear things they never heard before and live life in a different way.
"I feel like I've been blessed with a miracle because I can hear things I never realized that my clock in my TV room ticked until I had my hearing aids in,” said Thera Cherubini, one of the contestant winners.
This year's contestants say they can't thank U.P. Audiology enough for their generous contribution.
U.P. Audiology says they plan to spread holiday cheer again next year by doing the same thing.
