Two people were killed Friday night in western Upper Michigan in a head-on snowmobile crash.

Michigan State Police report it happened at 7:12 P.M., Central Time, on Lake Gogebic, near Lake Gogebic State Park, about 500 feet from shore.

The names of those involved are not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

Police say a 23 year old man from Riverton, Illinois riding a snowmobile, slammed head-on into a snowmobile driven by a 53 year old man from Darwin, Minnesota. CPR was initiated on both men, before first responders arrived. Once medical personnel were on scene, both men were pronounced dead.

Speed and alcohol are both believed to have played a role in this crash. Accident Investigators from the Wakefield State Police Post and Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene for further investigation.

Troopers were assisted on the scene by the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, Beacon Ambulance, Marenisco First Responders and Marenisco Township Fire Department.
