UPDATE: Names released in deadly Portage Township fire

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Investigators have released the victims' names from a deadly house fire Saturday morning.

The Michigan State Police say the two victims have been identified as 69-year-old Mary Burton and 72-year-old Rodney Lafond. According to WPBN-TV, the two were brother and sister.

On Saturday, Jan. 18 at approximately 7:21 a.m., troopers from the St. Ignace Post responded to a residential house fire where two people were trapped. Multiple fire departments responded, and fire department officials located two deceased residents inside the home.

Police say the investigation is continuing with the assistance of members of the MSP Fire Marshall Division and is still under investigation.

The structure fire was battled by members of the Portage Township Fire Department, Garfield Township Fire Department, Newton Township Fire Department, Columbus Township Fire Department and Newberry Fire Department.

Two Portage Township residents are dead after a structure fire in the township Saturday morning.

Michigan State Police troopers from the St. Ignace Post responded to the fire around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The structure fire was battled by members of the Portage Township Fire Department, Garfield Township Fire Department, Newton Township Fire Department, Columbus Township Fire Department and Newberry Fire Department.

Two residents were unable to escape from the home. The names of the victims are not being released at this time. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of members of the MSP Fire Marshall Division.
