Troopers work towards ending hunger by stuffing a blue goose

BARAGA, Mich. (WLUC) - Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post and five grocery stores in Baraga and Houghton Counties will be working together to host “Stuff a Blue Goose” charity event. Troopers teamed up with Larry’s market in Baraga Friday for the event.

"Stuff a Blue Goose" is being held in conjunction with 29th Annual Michigan Harvest Gathering Campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to raise hunger awareness and to provide food to local food pantries.

“We've been doing this now for four years where we go around all our local grocery stores, and we partner with them, and we gather food for less fortunate people,” said Randy Danison, Michigan State Police First Lieutenant,” [Food] gets brought to the food pantry for those who are in need of food in the area."

All of the grocery stores participating have pre-made grab bags available for customers to purchase for donation. Bags are $5 and filled with non-perishable food items valued at $10 or more. You may also donate your own non-perishable food items.

All of the groceries from Friday's collection will go to St. Vincent de Paul in L'Anse.

"St. Vinny's pantry is very grateful for everything that they get. Everybody who is donating today is very thankful, they think it's a great cause and are glad to be part of it,” said Danison.

Peter Magaraggia, owner of Larry’s Food Market, agrees.

"It's a very good cause and there is a lot of people in need, especially this time of the year,” said Peter Magaraggia, “A lot of heat bills are starting to come and what not, and any food donations they can get and the pantry needs it. And it’s a good feeling when you get involved in your community and it's a simple way to give back.”

Last year, the Michigan State Police Calumet Post gathered over 8,000 pounds of food in total and hope to get even more this year. See the full list of all the grocery stores participating below:
