Trevor Ohlsen finding success in the music industry

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) - One of Iron Mountain's own is trying to make it big in the music business, and he's off to a good start with a few songs on local radio.

Trevor Ohlsen is 22 years old and was born in Iron Mountain. Trevor's family has a background in music, so pursuing a career as an acoustic singer/songwriter was a natural fit for him.

"My dad owns The Music Tree in Iron Mountain for 32 years, and then his dad was a musician, and then my great grandpa had the Ohlsen's Coronet Marching Band in like World War I or II or something like that," Trevor Ohlsen says.

But Trevor hasn't always held a good tune. "I was 14 when I started, and I was not good," Ohlsen says, laughing at himself. But at 14, Trevor started writing his own songs and it stuck.

"It's almost like a calling ya know, how people say you find your calling, it was in me. I could hear it just saying 'you should write,'" Ohlsen explains.

At age 18, Trevor started seriously considering music as a career, so he went to McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minn., and pursued his passion. While he was in Minnesota, he wrote his first hit, "Michigan." "'Michigan' - I wrote that one when I was in Minneapolis and I was like kind of homesick, I hadn't been home for at least half a year. I use music as kind of an outlet to express how I feel, so that's how Michigan came about," Ohlsen describes.

Since then, Trevor has released two other songs on the radio, "Speechless" and a Christmas cover, "Mary Did You Know?"

Trevor currently plays at bars and events around the Upper Peninsula, but in the next couple months, he'll be heading to Nashville to record one of his newest songs. Trevor will be setting up a Go Fund Me page in the near future to help with the costs associated with his trip, such as recording and producer costs.

"It's just like any other career, just take it slow. Everyone says that it's so hard to be a successful musician, but it's also really hard to be a successful businessman or a successful entrepreneur in anything, so it's going really well. Every day is just one step closer to what I want to do and what I want to accomplish," says Ohlsen.

Trevor will be playing live at Bimbo's in Iron Mountain on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. You can also check out his website, YouTube and Facebook pages:
