MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - It's not too often you hear of young entrepreneurs being nominated and winning an award for business excellence after one year of owning a business.

But the young Trenary Home Bakery owners made it happen, and they're proud to serve as an example for others to follow.

"It shows that we're on the right path, and it's nice to network with all these successful folks that we aspire to be,” said Marco Dossena, one of the co-owners for Trenary Home Bakery.

The young business owners' journey to this point started after the pair graduated from Northern Michigan University.

Throughout their time there, the duo felt a sense of place in the U.P., and wanted to stay.

"Unfortunately, after we graduated from college, we couldn't find work so we moved down to Chicago and lived down there for a couple of years,” said Bri Wynsma, one of the co-owners for Trenary Home Bakery.

As the pair began working for start-up companies, they realized they wanted to start their own business in a place they loved, which ended up being in the U.P.

"We happened to meet the previous owner of the bakery, and he was looking to sell so the timing just worked out. We're young, we took a chance and here we are,” explained Wynsma.

Operation Action U.P. co-chairs hope the knowledge they provided at Thursday’s workshop will help the young owners continue growing their business.

"We try to be on the cutting edge and bring in speakers that can provide information that's meaningful and relevant, and gives the businesses here in the area, the opportunity to consider the information and build their plans accordingly,” said Operation Action U.P. Co-chair, Brett French.

Trenary Home Bakery recently launched their new Chocolate Chip Trenary Toast flavor in November.

The business plans to expand their product line to a seasonal item, and then launch another product sometime this summer.

In the meantime, the owners will continue growing their online presence through YouTube and Google, and through social media.

Other recipients for the Business Awards of Excellence were Advanced Center for Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery, Bacco Construction Company and Hurley Marine, Inc.
