(WLUC) - "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek says he has good news from doctors after the first round of chemotherapy sessions to treat his stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
In a PEOPLE Magazine exclusive interview, Trebek said he has been responding very well to chemotherapy, adding his doctors say he is "near remission."
“The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory… some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent," Trebek told PEOPLE.
The full story with Trebek will appear in the June 10 issue of PEOPLE Magazine. It's available online and will be in newsstands and subscriber mailboxes by Friday.
“They are VERY happy with the way I have responded to the chemo and in fact say that I am ‘near remission,'" Trebek said. "I want to be clear that I am not cured and not in remission, but the doctors say they have never seen such a positive response to chemo. I believe that this response is due in large part to the thoughts and prayers of all of my friends, co-workers, and the millions of fans who have been sending positive energy on my behalf.”
The 78-year-old Trebek announced his diagnosis March 6 in a YouTube video that said "I'm going to fight this" and "I plan to beat the low survival rates for this disease."
"Jeopardy!" airs Monday-Friday at 5:30 p.m. eastern on TV6 and at 7:00 p.m. eastern on FOX UP.
