NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - Saturday was the last day of Negaunee’s Pioneer days. The eight day celebration ended with fireworks, a parade, and of course, the Firemen Tournament.
Hosted by the Negaunee City Fire Department, and organized by TV6’s Steve Asplund, seven Marquette County Fire Departments competed for the winning title. The tournament was a test of speed, strength, and endurance as firefighters had to put on gear, assemble a hose, and spray water at a target.
Ishpeming City Fireman, Markus Maddock, tells us how his team’s race went.
"We did alright. We need a little bit of practice, but we go for first and that's all that matters, eh? So, if you don’t win, you lose,” said Maddock.
The annual event is part of preparation for the U.P. Fireman’s Tournament, taking place later this month.
It’s estimated over 100 people came to watch the Firemen Tournament, grab a hotdog and grilled corn, and celebrate in the festivities.
