School may be out for the summer around the U.P., but some students in Escanaba are using some of their summer vacation to learn about cybersecurity.

The Air Force Association along with the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District (ISD) and Bay College have teamed up to provide a cybersecurity camp called “CyberPatriot.”

The 5-day-long camp includes four days of classroom instruction and on the fifth day, a cybersecurity competition for the students to show their skills.

"The youngest youth to senior citizens need to know basic cybersecurity essentials to stay safe online and protect devices, information that they have, and their identities," said Delta-Schoolcraft ISD Information Technology Instructor, Josh Blumensaadt.

Blumensaadt added that the focal point of the camp is the defensive side of cybersecurity, such as how to protect networks against hackers and how to create strong password policies for those networks.
