Local steelworkers picked up the donations Friday morning at Negaunee, Ishpeming and NICE schools, weighed them and then delivered them to food pantries in Ishpeming and Negaunee.
At Negaunee's Lakeview Elementary School, a kindergarten student brought the most food in.
"A bag every day," said Harrison Huhta. "To help other people eat food."
It all supports the annual TV6 Canathon, which has been helping feed the Upper Peninsula since 1982.
"Typically we collect in the thousands of pounds of food," said Callie Ruohomaki, the Women of Steel Chair for the USW Local 4950. "I know that last year we did in-between 6,000 and 8,000 pounds of cans and other food."
Students from Ishpeming's Hartman High School also volunteered to help and say they were inspired what the elementary and middle school students accomplished.
Allyson Solander, a kindergarten teacher at Lakeview, says her students have been learning about helping others.
"We talk about it daily, so that it's in their mind when they go home and then they can talk to their parents about it," said Solander. "We just have a lot of really supportive, awesome parents this year that want to help out."
But it's not just helping the community, as teachers say the students learn a valuable lesson, too.
"We talk about the importance of giving back to others, about how important it is to care about our neighbor, to treat them kindly," said Solander. "We talk about if we were in need, if we would want someone to help us and how important it is to make those people feel loved and cared for."
They're learning charity by helping feed a hungry neighbor or even a hungry classmate.
The TV6 Canathon runs from November 11 until December 4. There will be drop-off locations across Upper Michigan. The food you donate stays in your community. Learn more by clicking here.
