The Marquette County Sheriff's Office rescued dozens of people who became stranded at Little Presque Isle Tuesday evening.

At 7:13 p.m., deputies say they responded to a call of several hikers stranded on Little Presque Island. Upon arrival, deputies saw a large group of people on the south side of the island.

The special operations division of the Marquette County Sheriff's Office responded and used their 24-foot Boston Whaler boat to bring 37 people safely to shore.

Sheriff Greg Zyburt says Lake Superior was relatively calm when the group crossed the sand bar and went out the island, but then it kicked up with three-to-five foot waves. The group was mostly adults and teens, but there were a couple of children and one dog, Zyburt says.

The group was from out of town, authorities say. No injuries were reported.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Marquette County Rescue 131, Chocolay Township Fire and Marquette Township Fire also responded.
