ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - As a result of "The Leader in Me" program that has been implemented at the Soo Hill Elementary school, students are finding ways to take a more active role in the classroom as well as the community.
On Friday, dozens of the school's students took part in organizing a breakfast for more than 50 of the area's veterans.
Students were encouraged to invite a family member or friend who is veteran to attend the event.
The students sat with the veterans for breakfast and asked questions to learn about their military service.
3rd-grader Matthew Caron said a few words on behalf of his fellow students.
"We are excited to share this with the community. Thank you Mrs. Ives for organizing our Veterans Day breakfast. We would also like to thank all of our veterans for their service. Thanks for serving our country."
This was the school's first veteran's breakfast but the students said that it's something they plan to continue in the future.
