Soldiers raising awareness about veteran suicide make it to the Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (WLUC) - The two soldiers walking across the Upper Peninsula to raise awareness about veteran suicide, Staff Sergeant Michael Beattie and First Lieutenant Cody Cass, made it to Sault Ste. Marie Friday.

Staff Sgt. Beattie made it about 140 miles into the trek before developing tendonitis. A doctor said he was not allowed to walk more than one mile a day, so he did that for each additional day on crutches. On the final day, he walked the final five miles without crutches.

First Lt. Cass was able to make the total 322 miles and just developed some blisters along the way.

The Michigan National Guard said these two soldiers couldn’t have done it without the support of the U.P. communities.
