ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - During Black Friday, many shoppers stake out sales at nationally owned stores. But, some community members in Escanaba looked to spend some of their dollars locally.

Several shoppers came out to Downtown Escanaba to get some shopping done on Friday. The city has had initiatives in place all week to motivate community members to shop locally, including a special Tuesday shopping night.

It’s events like these that help businesses thrive in small towns.

“We’re having a great day, the sales are up, we’re just happy that people are shopping downtown. People are coming in from out of town because it’s just a great place to be,” said Pauline Sarasin, and employee at “Positively.”

Tomorrow, local businesses expect more shoppers during “Small Business Saturday,” a nationwide campaign to help encourage people to spend their dollars locally.
